Have you been wondering if fertility awareness is the right choice for you?
It’s always tricky making birth control decisions, especially when there is so much conflicting information. You probably hear from your doctor that you absolutely should not do fertility awareness (unless you have a particularly knowledgeable doctor). Your family is probably in the same boat (unless your Catholic).
But you feel like maybe it would actually be awesome for you. You can’t help but think that you can totally dominate all of this fertility tracking business and get all of the cool benefits of fertility awareness along the way.
Natural birth control. Check.
Easy on the environment. Check.
Body empowerment. Hell yeah check.
Figuring out what’s going on with your hormones. Check.
Better relationship with your partner. Check.
But what about the other stuff? Is it going to be too hard? Will you accidentally fuck up and get pregnant? Are you actually going to remember to do everything? Is it reliable in the first place?
That’s what I want to answer. (First, a tiny aside, if you want to GET pregnant and you are wondering if fertility awareness is for you, read this right here.)
So, who should use this method for birth control? And should YOU use it?
The general overview of who it will and will not work for…
Let me start with some of the reasons it might not be for you (yes, I will tell you straight up if this isn’t going to work for you):
You are absolutely aghast at the thought of either abstaining or using a condom for about 8-9 days per cycle. You’d rather die, thankyouverymuch.
You do not want to take the time to take your temperature when you wake up or to check your cervical fluid. Not to mention keeping it all on a chart of some type.
You have no motivation to learn it and really don’t think the benefits would outweigh the time to put in understanding your cycle.
You are grossed out by bodily fluids of all types and there is no way anyone is ever going to get you to touch cervical fluid.
So what about those who should use it, who is it perfect for?
Your highest priority is health and you love that not only are you not taking in hormones, but you can also monitor your hormonal health with this information (squee!).
You don’t mind that there is some effort involved to learn, since the knowledge will last you a lifetime and you love learning all kinds of life skills, anyway.
You absolutely love having control over things. Knowing exactly how your birth control works and having control over that sounds million times safer to you than just getting an IUD or taking a pill and not really knowing what’s going on.
You are into tracking body stuff in general. Another sign to track? Sounds awesome.
You don’t want to put more hormones into the water system or create excessive trash (some might call you eco-concious ;))
You are trying to figure out something hormonal health related and would love to fix it with holistic measures. Having the consistent feedback on whether what you are doing is working or not sounds dreamy.
You don’t want to use hormones or an IUD, but you also don’t want to get pregnant.
If the first batch sounds more like you, there is a good chance fertility awareness is not for you right now. If the second batch does… I’m getting all excited inside just thinking about it (because I’m a fertility awareness nerd, obviously).
I realize you maybe (ok, probably!) have questions relating to your specific situation, as well. I’d love to answer them for you so feel free to contact me and I’d be happy to help :)

Hi Hannah! I’m glad you made a post about this because this is actually what I have been thinking about! I’m really excited about being aware of my fertility but I don’t know if for some reason it’s not for me since my periods are really irregular. I’m currently reading TCOYF and there is such great information there, I will keep reading both your website and the book!

That’s definitely a great book to read! You can still use the method with irregular cycles, since you are checking only fertility signs and not just counting days, but sometimes for some people your potential fertile period is longer :)

Outlining who exactly this is for versus who this isn’t for is fantastic…it definitely helps to make an informed decision when you are considering various methods of birth control and family planning, right?

This article is awesome! I wish I would’ve read it years ago before I took birth control (which I now regret). I’ll be sure to pass this along to my friends. Thanks for sharing, Hannah!
