While I often talk about how important it is to learn the sympto-thermal method from a teacher, I do also admit that I may be biased since I teach the method!
While that statement is true, I want to try to shed some light on why I do think it is important, as objectively as possible.
1.) Individual attention and review of your own charts. This will help you with technique, figure out how to make the practice sustainable for you, pinpoint possible health issues, and so on.
2.) Misconceptions! Every single person that I have talked to after reading even the most comprehensive books on the sympto-thermal method of fertility awareness still had confusions. These included not knowing how to classify cervical fluid, relying on calculations, that they should only ever check their cervical fluid before they go to the bathroom, etc. Some of these are definitely misinterpretations, some of these are areas in which the books definitely do fall short.
Because you will see the the same biologic processes happening as a result of your hormones as other women, it’s easy to simplify down and teach as one core method. At the same time, the way each woman experiences her cycle will be different, and someone who knows how to help a woman decipher what she is seeing and label that correctly can be priceless in the process of learning such a valuable life skill.
If you are interested in learning the method, check out my classes. If you want to read a book that is great, but you may do best with a follow-up to make sure that you are doing everything correctly and it’s a sustainable practice for you.
